Laboratory Certification

The North Carolina Wastewater/Groundwater Laboratory Certification (NC WW/GW LC) program is a vital component in the effort to ensure the quality of analytical data used for regulatory purposes by various programs within the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Chemistry Laboratory Operations

The Division of Water Quality Laboratory Section is committed to protecting and enhancing North Carolina's surface and groundwater resources for the citizens of North Carolina and future generations by providing the highest quality data and the best overall service in environmental testing. The Section's primary clients are the DWQ Surface Water Protection and Aquifer Protection Sections and the Division of Waste Management's Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section. Sample Collectors Pages

Part of the primary support function of the Laboratory Section is to provide resources, supplies and technical training and guidance for the proper collection, preservation and handling of environmental samples. Departmental employees may access sample collection and submittal guidance documents, print sample transmittal forms and order sample containers, chemical preservatives and other supplies by accessing the DWQ Sample Collector pages by clicking here.

LabWorks LIMS

LabWorks is the Laboratory Section's Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) used to handle and report the Laboratory's analytical data and provide the Division with a single, integrated database of analytical results. About the Laboratory Section

The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) Laboratory Section is a technical support organization with the following functions:

  • Provides analytical laboratory support ot the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the form of physical, chemical and microbiological analyses of stream, wastewater, groundwater, soil, sediment and fish tissue samples.
  • Operates a wastewater/groundwater laboratory certification program to ensure the quality of state-required monitoring analyses.
  • Provides consultation and assistance to state, federal and local agencies, private laboratories and individuals in matters of analytical methodology and quality assurance.

The Laboratory Section is comprised of managers, chemists, chemistry technicians and administrative and support personnel. The Section's primary clients are the DWQ Surface Water Protection and Aquifer Protection Sections and the Division of Waste Management's (DWM's) Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section.

The main facility (referred to as the Central Laboratory) is located in Raleigh, NC. A satellite laboratory is strategically located in the western (Swannannoa, NC) region of the state to provide assistance with time-sensitive tests. This is referred to as the Asheville Regional Office (ARO) Laboratory.
