Burt's Bees Dumpster Dive Day

DEAO's Brian Rosa is interviewed during the Burt's Bees Dumpster Dive Day, when employees sorted facility trash to identify recyclable or compostable materials. Burt's Bees, a member of the DENR Environmental Stewardship Initiative, found ways to cut company waste in half and are working towards Zero Waste to landfills. DEAO offers assistance with recycling, composting, employee training and other waste reduction practices.
Creating Jobs in N.C.

The North Carolina recycling economy continues an upward growth trend. In 2010, an estimated 15,200 private-sector recycling-related jobs in the state involved the collection, processing, manufacturing, reuse or composting of post-consumer or post-industrial materials. North Carolina recycling businesses are strong, diverse and use a large variety of recyclable or discarded materials that become feedstock for a wide variety of products.
WRP Engineers Help Clients Gain $4.6 Million in Energy Grant Funding

During fiscal years 2010 and 2011, Waste Reduction Partners statewide staff of volunteer and staff engineers assisted 41 clients, including county and municipal governments, K-12 schools, community colleges and Main Street communities to acquire $4.63 million in energy project funding. The funding sources included the ARRA energy funding through the State Energy Office, the EPA, and energy efficiency rebates from Progress Energy and Duke Energy.
Free, Confidential Environmental Permit Assistance to Small Businesses

DEAO staff provides free permit assistance to small businesses to help meet air quality and other DENR regulatory requirements. Many small businesses often times would not be able to hire needed consultants to help them achieve environmental compliance.
Electronics Recycling Becoming Big Business

End-of-life electronics processing is becoming more automated as the recycling infrastructure is developed.
DEAO Provides Free Cost-Saving Services to Facilities

DEAO's Ron Pridgeon uses an ultrasonic leak detector to locate compressed air leaks which can be tagged for necessary repair. During this air leak assessment twenty leaks were identified for repair, resulting in annual electricity savings of more than $8,000 for the facility. Organic Wastes Become Value-Added Products

Composting operations in North Carolina turn organic materials such as food waste, yard trimmings, biosolids, animal manures, and woody by-products into rich soil amendments.
Old Tires Get New Life

Used tires collected by North Carolina's counties are used in civil engineering, industrial, athletic field, paving and landscaping applications as as fuel for kilns, mills and power plants.
From Roofs to Roads

North Carolina paving companies use recycled roofing shingles in asphalt production.
Leadership in Environmental Performance in the Manufacturing Sector

DENR Secretary Dee Freeman (L) and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations'___________ discuss the wetlands in the 300 acre Freedom Wildlife Habitat and Refuge built by BATO at their Wilson Facility. BATO, a Steward in the DENR Environmental Stewardship Initiative, is an example of leadership in environmental performance in the manufacturing sector as well as in education and conservation efforts in the local community.
Which Permits Do I Need?

Permit scoping meetings typically encompass a collection of local, state and federal resource staff as well as clients and their consultants. The purpose is to have all permitting representatives at the table to discuss possible permits and foreseeable obstacles for the course of the given project. By offering scoping meetings to potential clients it is a way to encourage compliance on the front-end, ease customer anxiety and eliminate negative environmental impacts by offering different alternatives from experienced staff.

Tip of the Week

In fall 2011, the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources held listening sessions across the state and launched two surveys to gather feedback from staff and customers about ways to improve services and processes. This report details the results of these listening sessions and surveys and includes recommendations based on this feedback.

The Environmental Assistance Center (EAC) was created in 2011 to help DENR regulated entities find answers to their permitting and compliance questions. The EAC also offers free and confidential environmental sustainability assistance, including water and energy efficiency, recycling and composting, and education on how to prevent waste and pollution.

The Environmental Stewardship Initiative assists industries, businesses, institutions and government agencies in reducing environmental impacts and recognizes those that maintain a strong commitment to sustainability. Free training, technical assistance and networking are available to members.
